SA Flying and Testing:
Currently offering the following services to SA PPL holders in the UK

  • Specialising in mentoring private pilots in the UK, where-ever they originally trained. Introduction to the UK lessons are 'business as usual' with a number of interesting routes (short to cut down costs) which acclimatise foreign trained pilots to UK naviagtion, airspace entities and processes. As a 'pilot trained abroad' you probably have a number of questions, in fact, there are questions you don't realise you should ask! Even if you plan to fly at another airfield nearer your home in the UK, there's a huge difference between turning up at the rental organisation there never having flown in the UK and not even knowing the right terms, and turning up with some interesting and useful UK flights already in your log book, and already 'talking the talk'.
  • SA PPL revalidations or renewals or type changes within 'SEP'. Please remember your SA PPL and SEP rating is NOT the same as a UK JAA SEP rating - you need a SA approved instructor to authorise a change of type even within SEP class, and send paperwork to the SA CAA. UK instructors do not understand this, resulting in some SA pilots flying illegally after sign off by a UK instructor, putting themselves and the aircraft in danger of insurance payouts being refused in case of incident.
  • Conversion advice, especially if you are settling in the UK. Currently your SA PPL allows you to fly the same UK aircraft that it covers in SA, subject to your paperwork being in order. (I have a list of UK based SA approved doctors for your SA Medical should it fall due.) However, the EU is threatening this liberal attitude to foreign licensed pilots and current indications are that the EU EASA body may try to stop foreign licensed pilots from flying UK certified aircraftin 2012. It is not clear yet if there will be any cut-over period. Conversions are also expected to be more difficult when EASA introuduce new rules in 2012, so it might be worth looking at converting to a UK JAA PPL before then.
